MAN Common Rail Fixed Price Service Program
MAN has been at the forefront of diesel engine technology since it’s inception and as a result been one of the first diesel engine manufacturers to adopt common rail technology across its entire range. The benefits of common rail fuel injection and electronic engine control are clearly evident as fuel economy, environmental impact and power to weight performance have driven modern engine development forward.
MAN’s commitment to lead the diesel engine revolution is clearly highlighted by the recent introduction of their new generation of V8 and V12 engines. This new generation compliments the existing common rail engines and provides a range of pleasure rated engines from 730hp through to 1800hp.
Common rail, electronic technology does however require in increased level of service and maintenance when compared to it’s forbearer, the mechanical diesel engine. Technicians require additional factory training, electronic diagnostic tooling is a necessity as is a clean working environment. The engines themselves require synthetic oils and better maintenance due to the increased working pressures and temperatures throughout the engine. Very high pressures utilised by common rail technology is also a very real health and safety issue further highlighting the need for proper factory training.
Due to these increased demands MAN have made it a requirement that for MAN dealers to be able to work on common rail engines they must, as a minimum have completed factory common rail training and have MANcatsII electronic diagnostic tooling. Seapower Australia met these changing requirements head on and implemented a new level of MAN dealer. The ‘Gold’ Standard Dealer is the only authorised agent permitted to work on a MAN common rail engine during its warranty period but to gain this new status the standard MAN dealer must have undergone factory common rail training and have MANcatsII electronic diagnostic tooling.
It is now felt that the numbers of MAN common rail engines coming into Australia has grown to sufficient numbers to implement the ‘Gold’ standard dealer process to gain a better spread of expertise and customer support.
The Common Rail Engine Fixed Price Service Program standardises our approach to all MAN common rail engine owners within Australia by providing a common approach and common price for service work. Levels of service standards and even service inclusions have varied greatly. The Common Rail Engine Fixed Price Service Program aims to provide a standard approach by:
- Setting a minimum standards of working practices for each and every service. This includes stipulating working practices such as ‘all deck walkways will be lined prior to commencement of work’ and overalls and footwear must be clean and presentable at the beginning of each service.
- Setting a standard set of inclusions for every service, detailed in writing, based upon MAN service book instructions.
- Setting a standard price for each service, nationwide.
- Providing common paperwork for the implementation of the fixed price program to ensure the customer receives the same experience no matter where he has his service.
Obviously every boat and every service has its variances that can differ greatly with each service. That is why we have included the standard items that are a constant for each service and excluded items that vary. These exclusions are still chargeable and would include items such as travel and the replacement of damaged or worn parts identified during the ‘checking’ phase of a service. The variation form will be an integral part of the new program and will be used to capture these extras over and above the standard service.
